Business Line, Friday, August 19, 2005 – Manipal Hospital unveils telemedicine unit in Mauritius
MANIPAL Hospital today announced the launch of its first telemedicine unit outside India.

The Unit has been set up at Cliniq Du Nord, the largest hospital in Northern Mauritius and will offer medical solutions in the space of telemedicine / eHealth. Manipal hospital is recognized by Government of Mauritius, as its tertiary care referral Hospital.

This is the first ever telemedicine centre to be set up in Mauritius. It was inaugurated by the Minister of Health, Government of Mauritius, Mr. Satish Faugoo.

Mr. R. Basil, CEO, Manipal Hospital and Manipal Health System, who addressed the press at Mauritius over telemedicine link, said, “Telemedicine is a new healthcare delivery model that we are now using for the benefit of patients. The telemedicine for us is not just consultation, but a complete eHealth package.”

Speaking from Mauritius, Mr. Mukhesh Sooknundun, Director of the Cliniq Du Nord, said, “The beginning of telemedicine centre will not only allow us to take care for very complicated cases, but will be of more help to the patients.”

Mr. Sandeep Sinha, Manager eHealth Strategy, TeleVital India, a software company providing connectivity solutions across the diagnostic electronics, said that by using this kind of new healthcare delivery model Indian healthcare industry can reach out to the global community. TeleVital is association with Manipal Hospital and Manipal Health Systems is leading this initiative by setting up many more centres in African Region.

Manipal hospital Telemedicine Network is based on a “server-based technology” and uses a hub (Manipal Hospital) and spoke (Nodes like Privat Hospital) model. Manipal’s eHealth package includes teleconsultation, workshops and medical education programmes, domiciliary telehealth initiatives in housing complexes and community centres, ambulatory programmes, remote ICU monitoring and tele-diagnosis.
