| The Times of India, Saturday, August 20, 2005 – City hospital launches telemedicine project |
|
For hospitals in Bangalore, embracing new infotech tools has helped them transcend even national borders to
deliver healthcare. On Thursday, Manipal Hospital opened a telemedicine centre at Cliniq du Nord in Mauritius.
The project involves overseas consultation and treatment. According to telemedicine consultant for the
World Health Organisation (WHO), Sanjay P. Sood, citizens of Mauritius (Who have had operations at Manipal
Hospital), can get follow-up advice from their surgeons in Bangalore. The telemedicine centre will also be
used by patients who want a second opinion on their diagnosis.
Manipal already has a tie-up with the Government of Mauritius whereby neonates from that country are sent
to Bangalore for heart surgeries.
ISRO Tie-up: Manipal also expects to become a part of the telemedicine network established by Indian Space
Research Organisation soon. “This will help us connect with other centres in the North East and even across
Karnataka,” said manager telemedicine Harish Manian.
One of the services on offer will be consultation on emergency neurosurgery as well as interactions with
ambulances in distant places. “These remote hospitals need not spend money on expensive equipment,” he added.
CEO of Manipal Hospital and Health System. R. Basil, said: “There creative and innovative ways help them
reach out to the masses. “The advent of the new infotech tools has led to some outsourcing too. For example,
a healthcare centre in London now gets its radiology reports read and analysed at Manipal Hospital.
